Our History

In 1930, during some of the most troubling economic times in our nation's history, Ralph Miedema, the son of Dutch immigrants, was determined to make the most of this land of opportunity and launched a small vegetable farm. His son, Elmer, joined the family business in the 1940s followed by his grandsons, Dave and Ken, in the 1970s. The business was incorporated in 1976 as E. Miedema & Sons, Inc., and continued to expand their customer base. In 2002, brokerage sales were added in order to supply customers with fresh produce all year long.

Dave and Ken were joined by their five sons, continuing the tradition of farming excellence into it's fourth generation, and in 2013, began working with a succession counselor to move them into leadership. Little did they know the importance that transition would hold. In early 2014, we said goodbye to a son, a father, a brother and a business partner. Ken was diagnosed with cancer, and passed away only 8 short weeks later, but his life-long commitment to his family and their business is continued through his sons and nephews, who continue to employ the values and work ethic he taught by his example.

Today, we farm over 1600 acres, employ 12 full-time employees, and over 100 seasonal workers. Leaning on the invaluable experience of nearly a century of farming heritage, we work daily to maintain that same high standard of quality and excellence.
